It depends what's in it.

The Hidden Trap

One word in a recipe can make your measurements 50% wrong.

⚠️ Level vs Heaped — The Difference That Ruins Bakes
8g
1 level tbsp flour
vs
12–14g
1 heaped tbsp flour
A level tablespoon is filled to the rim and scraped flat with a straight edge — like the back of a knife. Every conversion on this page uses level measurements.

A heaped tablespoon is filled as generously as the ingredient will hold. For flour, a heaped tablespoon can weigh up to 50–75% more than a level one. For dense ingredients like sugar or cocoa, the difference is smaller but still significant.

When a recipe doesn't specify — assume level. Heaped tablespoons are old British cookbook terminology, increasingly rare in modern recipes. If you're following a newer recipe and it says "tbsp", it means level.
💡 The Tablespoon Equivalents You Need to Know
1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons — so if you only have a teaspoon measure, use it three times.

16 tablespoons = 1 cup — so ¼ cup is 4 tablespoons, ½ cup is 8 tablespoons, ¾ cup is 12 tablespoons.

UK and US tablespoons are the same — both 15ml. Australian tablespoons are 20ml — if you're using an Australian recipe, 1 Aus tablespoon = 1⅓ standard tablespoons.
